Mark 1:40-45 – 40 A leper came to him begging him, and kneeling he said to him, “If you choose, you can make me clean.” 41 Moved with pity, Jesus stretched out his hand and touched him, and said to him, “I do choose. Be made clean!” 42 Immediately the leprosy left him, and he was made clean.
As I read this scripture from the Gospel of Mark I was struck with the desire this outcast had to be healed from this disfiguring, crippling, slow death disease. Jesus shows us His compassion in His willingness to heal this man. We see the Leper’s desire in his daring to even think about approaching a group of Jewish men walking down the road. This leper came to Jesus even though he knew that if he got within 50 paces the Law said that the men were within their right to throw stones at him to keep him at a safe distance. He also was required by Law to shout unclean whenever he was coming upon people. Can you just imagine the compassion that led Jesus to walk up to this man and touch him even though under the Law Jesus would be considered unclean himself. I don’t know but it seems to me that Jesus was there alone with the Leper. The disciples probably kind of hung back to keep the proper distance.
This thought pattern led me to think of how many of us truly seek healing from the touch of Jesus Christ. Many of us are plagued by diseases of the heart, mind and soul. Our spirits are held back and our spiritual growth is stunted because we hang on to the disease we have. It could be drugs or alcohol or sex or pornography or greed or selfishness or jealousy or many other diseases that cripple our souls. Jesus wants us to seek Him out like this leper did. He wants us to call out to Him because we want to be healed by Him. He can and will set us free from the disease that is plaguing us. Is the life you lead making you feel unclean? Do people shun you because of your actions? Seek out Jesus and call on Him. Seek His healing touch. Then go out and tell everyone who healed you.
Have a blessed week,

February 8, 2012I have another Matthew moment from our Bible Study tonight. In Matthew 20:20-28 we get to hear the mother of Zebedee’s sons ask Jesus if her sons James and John could sit one on the right hand and one on the left hand in His kingdom.
Perhaps we see a mother who wants her sons to have positions of power in the earthly kingdom that they still believe Jesus will create. But is it her ambition or theirs? Jesus tries to warn them that they will have to “drink from His cup” because they are His disciples but makes no promise to give a position that only God can grant. Now needless to say this band of disciple brothers were jealous or perhaps outraged that James and John would seek this high ranking position. Jesus addresses this disciple rilvary by letting the disciples know that they are to have on their minds how they might serve rather than looking for a position they could be served in.
I wonder just how many disciples of Jesus Christ today are looking for positions of importance in which they can garner the praise and sit in the seat that will get them served? It is always a struggle to be the servants servant but that is exactly what Jesus calls us to do. We must set aside our own will that leads us to the desire to be recognized and work on doing the will of Jesus Christ because it is what He calls us to do. It is a hard thing for us in our humanity to not seek praise for what we do but it is our role as Christians to do just that. Do what God through Jesus Christ calls us to do in a way that is humble and self sacrificing. God will see us and He will reward us with rewards that will be so much better than any plaque or certificate that man can create.
As Christians we do work for Christ because we love Him, want to give Him glory and honor and see His kingdom grow.
Have a blessed day, Randy

February 7, 2012In our Bible Study for this Wednesday we will be reviewing Matthew Chapter 20. Jesus tells the parable about workers getting the same pay (1 denarius) for the work they have done. Some of these workers went to work early in the morning, some in the middle of the day and some late in the day. In the parable they all receive the same pay. Jesus is telling His disciples that no matter what time in our life we come to a saving knowledge of Him we will all receive the same reward. That reward of course is our salvation and life eternal in Heaven with Him. The reward however does go further than that. Those of us who come to a saving knowledge of Jesus Christ early in our lives are blessed with a new outlook that can make our lives much better and can give us the opportunity to witness and share with many more people.
Jesus also was addressing the Jewish belief system which was saying that their favored nation status was being taken and given to all who believed in Him. We who come to this saving knowledge of Jesus Christ become children of God without following the letter of the law. Jesus teaches us that we are to love God and to love our neighbors as the most important guidelines we can follow. He even calls them two new commandments. Very important for us and for the new disciples. Jesus gives us all favored nation status as His children.
A learning for many in churches today would be that no matter how long we have been followers of Jesus Christ we are to be accepting of and care for those who are new believers. We need to remember that our status in God is just the same as the new believer. Our blessings in this life are that we have the opportunity to be known as people who love, care for and support each other no matter how long we have known our Savior. We are to be known as people who reach out to the world and exclude no one.
God’s Peace and Blessings to each and everyone,

February 2, 2012I had to leave the Fellowship Hall and got a glimpse of the sun peaking through the clouds. I walked out into the parking lot and was treated to a beautiful sunset view. I took the picture with my Iphone and it is a little blurry but what a beautiful picture it turned out to be.
Our Bible Study was on the Gospel of Matthew Chapter 19. Tommy Day covered the material for me because we were out of town last week and he needed another night to finish covering it. Tommy did a very good job and brought out some very good points. One of them was from verses 16-22. The rich young man came to him and asked the question “Teacher, what good deed must I do to have eternal life?” Here was a man who had wealth and followed all the commandments but was still searching for the one thing he could do to gain eternal life. When Jesus told him to sell his possessions and give the money to the poor he went away grieving, for he had many possessions.
How often do we grieve over our gift to God? Is our gift given with a heart that is glad to give? Are we sad over the things we could have had if we didn’t give?
Jesus call us to share and gives us a guideline, the tithe, one tenth of all that you have coming into your household. That guideline is the minimum not the maximum because we are called to give our tithes and our offerings. So the tithe is to be given as if it truly does belong to God and we consider other gifts to be given to the needy. The rich young man must have been grieved because Jesus told him to give the money to the poor. His place in society would say that the poor were untouchables and he would have taken the suggestion better if he were told to sell and give it to whom he chose such as relatives or friends. Jesus did not give him that choice because He knew that the man would selfishly give to those who would be able to give back to him.
Could Jesus’s point be that our gift is to be given with a heart that says we give it with no strings attached. That the place we worship is to do what it has been charged to do with whatever money is given. Most mainline denominations have extensive aid organizations that do very well with helping others in ways we as individuals could never afford to do. An example is the United Methodist Church’s UMCOR organization. The United Methodist Committee On Relief as an organization is supported in it’s entirety by the Church and its giving. Any gift given to UMCOR then is 100 percent applied to the designated need. Some disasters such as Haiti, Japan, the Tsunamis and Hurricane relief are examples of the massive aid effort helped by UMCOR.
Any gift given should be given with no strings attached and by a heart that is glad to help others. Is your heart really in your tithe? Do you go above and beyond because your heart says to share? Does your heart reflect the Holy Spirit into the world as Jesus calls you too?
God gives us beautiful sunsets and beautiful hearts. Take the time to see them both.

January 25, 2012Last night I watched the State of the Union Address by President Obama. It really got me to thinking but not necessarily about the things he was talking about. It was a state of the union and it was his view of how things were going with the United States. What he has gotten done and what he hopes to achieve.
It made me think about Jesus and His ministry. About what He has gotten done and what He hopes to achieve. We sometimes look to the leaders of our country to help us with our lives. We have faith in them because of what they tell us. Which is so often what we want to hear. Jesus told us so much in His short three-year ministry. Much of it words that we really didn’t want to hear. Words, however, that we needed to hear. Words that would heal us and help us through our lives if we would just hear them. I believe that if we would just listen to the words of Jesus we would hear the solutions to many of our problems today. That’s interesting isn’t it. Someone 2000 years ago could tell us about ourselves and how to solve our problems today.
Wouldn’t it be a great thing if our politicians listened to the words of the Savior of the world and used those words to help solve the problems of the world. Wouldn’t it be a great thing if we elected people who had compassion and genuinely cared about humanity and were not so interested in their own careers and selfish agendas. Now I am not saying that all politicians are bad but I am saying that there are many who are misled.
As Christians we are to be led by the one we believe is the Son of God. He will not mislead you. Try Him out as the one who can help solve those problems you need help with. I believe He can and will if you will depend upon Him.

January 23, 2012In one of our Bible Study times in Matthew 18 we heard Peter ask the question “How many times must he forgive his brother who has sinned against him, 7 times? Jesus tells Peter not 7 times but 77 times. In other words forgiveness is so important that we cannot put a number or limit on our forgiveness. If we never learn anything else from Jesus’s teachings we must learn that there is no limit to our love for our neighbor and no limit on our forgiveness.
One of the biggest stumbling blocks we ever can face is our unwillingness to forget those harmful things done to us that we are supposed to forgive people for. It is imperative for us as Christians to always remember that forgiveness and forgetting go hand in hand. You see the blood of Jesus Christ covers each one of us as believers and it means that God not only forgives us of our sins but forgets those sins as well. He can no longer see those sins because of the precious gift of Jesus Christ blood be poured out upon this earth.
When we pray the Lord’s Prayer, we ask for God’s Kingdom to come and His will to be done. We also ask that we are forgiven as those who have sinned and we ask to be forgiven as much as we have forgiven those who have sinned against us. This prayer and the premise it sets for us is so important for our lives and the peace that God promises us.
How often do you pray the Lord’s Prayer with unforgiveness and hurt in your heart? Can you forgive and forget? They are two inseparable words and promises. Practice these two words and life will get much better.
Have a blessed day while remembering that you are forgiven,
Randy

I am the one with just his nose sticking out. The one in the yellow is my brother Jim who lives in Utah. We are at Snow Basin which is just down the road from where he and Dianne live. Beautiful country with more post card picture scenes than you can shake a stick at. The trail we are about to ski is down the hill to the right.
In reading this scripture from Mark we see Jesus begin His ministry. We see Him subject Himself to John’s Baptism. John was offering baptism as a means for the Jewish people to show their repentance and return to righteousness.
Obviously Jesus did not need this baptism for repentance or righteousness but instead subjected Himself to it to show us the right and good way. He set this example for us as a way to start our lives anew. His baptism was the start of His ministry and is to be the start of ours also.
Our baptism in Jesus Christ is also a time of revelation to us about our lives. Just as God revealed to Jesus that He truly is the Son of God He reveals to us that we are His children. If we are truly repentant and seeking righteousness we will see our lives, the sin in them and work towards righteousness in Jesus Christ. What Christ came to give us is the realization that His blood has washed us clean and given us the freedom to worship Him even if we are living in sin. Our baptism is a sign of who we are in this world, a people living with sin in and around us but forgiven by the sacrifice Jesus has made for us. His baptism gives us the revelation that we are His children, washed clean and living in His righteousness.
How we live our lives in Christ is kind of like learning to snow ski. You just have to point your ski’s downhill and use the skills you have learned, hope that what you know will get you to the bottom of the slope and know that next time it will be a little easier. When we fall we get back up and get going again in the direction that leads to the bottom of the hill. Living our lives in Christ is knowing Him as our Savior in a way that we want to carry His message to the world. We sometimes start out with very few skills but know that our knowledge of and in Him will get us started down the right trail. We may make mistakes that we can learn from and make our trail easier next time. The most important point to realize is that Christ gives us the courage to step out in faith that will lead us down the path to guiding others into His saving grace.
In order to begin skiing we must point our ski’s downhill, give a little push, choose our path and know that if we fall we can get back up and try again. In order to become a child of Christ we must push ourselves to the altar, choose our path and know that if we fall we can get back up and try again.
God’s Peace and Blessing to all,
Randy

Seagulls at MacArthur Shopping Center parking lot.
This is just a few of the Seagulls that hang out in the parking lot. I am not sure why other than I did see someone feeding them the other day. To say the least they are a little off course as far as the normal environment they usually inhabit. There is not any natural food, you know fish, shrimp or salt water, so why do they hang out there. They are there on sunny days, rainy days, cold days and cold rainy days. But they are not there everyday. I am sure there is some scientific explanation other than they just got tired and decided to rest. Well maybe that is it, tired and resting.
Sometimes in our Christian lives we get a little lost, get tired and decide to just land somewhere and rest. Have you ever experienced feeling lost, tired and needing rest? Me too!
One of the essentials that seagulls seem to need is salt. They are hardly ever to0 far from saltwater. They depend upon it to provide the sustenance they need to survive in this world. Just like the seagulls we need salt but the salt that can make the biggest difference in our lives is the salt found in the Word of God. These few scriptures are very important to us and speak to us about how important it is for us to stay in His Word and keep it close to our hearts. We need to keep this salt close to our hearts and let the Word nourish us and revive us.
Mat 5:13 “You are the salt of the world. But if the salt should lose its taste, how can it be made salty again? It’s good for nothing but to be thrown out and trampled on by people.”
Mar 9:50 “Salt is good. But if salt loses its taste, how can you restore its flavor? Keep on having salt among yourselves, and live in peace with one another.”
Go to the place that offers you nourishment often. Live with those words close to your heart and revive your heart and soul. In our world today being salty may not be a compliment but being salty in the Word of God is never a wrong place to be. Like the salt water the seagulls live in we are a people of the Water and Salt found in His Word.
Have a blessed New Year, be of the Water and the Word getting the nourishment you need from His salty water. It will revive and refresh you,
Randy

December 27, 2011Christmas is over, or is it? The sun is setting on this year, isn’t it? Jesus Christ came to save us all not just for the one day of the year we celebrate His birth but everyday of our lives. So why do we act like this is the most important day of the year? Why do we go to so many extremes to buy, cook, invite, shop, eat, wrap, decorate, party and stress our lives away? Good question you say! Well I say it is a good question. One each of us as individuals need to answer based on our own reasons for how we waste away the opportunity to truly worship our Lord and Savior. Now I am not saying we should not enjoy the season and give to our family and friends, but what I do want to say is we focus on the wrong things while we are working our way through this season. Our focus with everything we do should be on the salvation, forgiveness and promise of eternity with our God. Our focus should be on His love poured on us and His teachings that show us the good and right way.
Spending time with family and friends showing the love you have for them is the good and right thing. Sharing all that God has given you with them is a really good thing too.
What I really want to say today is that we should treat Jesus just like He is a beloved member of our family. We should spend time with Him, we should hear Him talk to us, we should share our hopes and dreams with Him and live our lives as if He were shopping, eating, buying, decorating, cooking, partying and inviting right along with us. Perhaps we would spend at least some of the treasure we have on things He would have us do and on people He would have us be with. Kind of puts a different spin on it doesn’t it. Wouldn’t it change the way we do all the holiday things we do? Yes, I believe so too! A New Year is coming and could be a new way of living it if we will just think about what we do each and every day.
Have a blessed and very Happy New Year,
Randy
